To Whom It May Concern,
From childhood, I have always had a keen interest in animals. I was always the weird kid thrilled to receive a snake for my birthday. While my third grade peers wrote their book reports on Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, my summary highlighted the difference between Asian and African elephants. My interest has strengthened through the years as I have worked with animals in a variety of settings.
In 2008, I volunteered to work at a small animal hospital, Pleasant Valley Veterinary Services, in Washington, NJ. I was then offered employment, and continued to work at the hospital through my sophomore year in college. I gained insight to private practice veterinary medicine and worked hands on with pets. One of my favorite responsibilities was rubbing the newborn puppies after a cesarean section to stimulate breathing. Then, in 2009, I contacted large animal veterinarian, Dr. Jon Higgins, and began traveling with him to local farms. Dr. Higgins specializes in embryo transfer, so I had the unique opportunity to witness the collection, storage, and transfer of bovine embryos to surrogate mothers. Under the supervision of Dr. Higgins, I can now read an ultrasound and discern the early signs of pregnancy. As an intern at The Raptor Trust this past summer, I had a completely different relationship with the animals I worked with. The Raptor Trust is a rehabilitation center for wild birds. Therefore, rather than handling trained animals, I cared for animals governed by their innate tendencies. I learned many of the methods concerning bird rehabilitation, and had the opportunity to feed and handle songbirds and waterfowl. With each experience, my curiosity about the practice of veterinary medicine increases, as well as my desire to pursue the field as a profession.
I hope this portfolio will give you insight to my practical experiences in the veterinary field, as well as my other qualifications. If you have any questions, please contact me at jaeger5@tcnj.edu. Thank you for your time.
